Maps
Greenfields
- With no less than 45 estates this is the largest map,
and the only one that can be played
on easy difficulty (and, thus, without an opponent) without
employing the maps751 cheat.
As the name suggests, a green meadowland with dirt roads
that turn tarmac when developed.
Riverside
- This is just a variation of Greenfields, divided by a
river with four bridges, which causes the loss of a couple of
estates. Gameplay-wise the river makes no difference (it might
be marginally easier to intercept undesirables, since they
cannot use the subway). Optically, it is a dissappointment,
mainly because a very unnatural-looking strip of grass
remains on both sides of the river throughout the game.
Small Town
- Again this is a variation of Greenfields, just greatly
reduced in size. It is the easiest map to win the world
domination scenario on, but otherwise not very remarkable.
Concrete City
- Now this map is really different. A dreary, derelict town
in some formerly communist country, as evident from red stars
and propaganda posters (and the name of the menu graphic is
MAPSOVIE). Three railroad lines divide it, and there are some
cemetaries. Roads are tarmac to begin with, and turn to red
brick once developed, unfortunately swallowing up the pedestrian
crossings. I especially admired the background sound effects.
From gameplay, this map is different too. There are long narrow
estates which are perfect for factories, while others allow
for really large gardens. This is my favorite map.
Jungle
- The last map is a bit silly. It is really a jungle, with
the estates on stone elevations. Since every estate is practically
an island, this might influence gameplay, but I haven't really
tested it yet.
While the graphics for the last two maps are radically different
from the first three, the sprites for houses and fences are exactly
the same. This is really a pity. Just some variations in the fences,
or in the ground textures, could have meant a lot.
