There is still a rudiment of this in the game, you can copy dialogs to your log, but originally this was supposed to work like a text editor, even allowing you to choose color for your text. There is still the graphic (NOTE.RCI, MASK02I0.IMG, and an older version MASK06I0.IMG), and two messages in the TEXT.RSC:

The word you seek does not appear in your notes.
It might be possible that the now-useless item parchment was supposed to be used in this context.
