For some reason, there are different graphics
for clothes and armor of humans, elves, argonians, and
khajit, even though their bodies differ only in color
and there is only one set of artefacts for each sex.
And for some reason, the humans received the worst.
For the other races, chainmail is really chainmail,
for the humans, it just looks speckled (compare the
pictures to the left and right click on one
of them for a larger version). And at least
for the females, the palette of some silver/elven armor
is incorrect. But that's easily remedied. In the ARENA2
folder, just do the following from a DOS prompt:
copy texture.246 texture.247 copy texture.250 texture.251
The first line is for female armor, the second for male. Now your humans, too, can be knights in shining armor. If you want to, you can backup texture.247 beforehand by renaming it, but it's not really necessary. After all, it's still on your CD.
A possible side effect is that sometimes helmets do not cover the hair correctly any more. I have no idea what causes this, and it does not always happen. If you want to be sure to avoid this, then instead of the simple method described above, use Andypic: Extract all the relevant images (plate mail and chainmail, but not the helmets) from texture.246 and import them into texture.247.
As an interesting sidenote, the files for elven, argonian, and khajit females are completely identical (with the sole exception that the kite shield in texture.245 has a slightly different shade of brown in its wooden part), while the four files for male characters are all different.
