Random Encounters: Homeless

You can only find this encounter (A group of homeless people) on areas 11 and 12 (around Klamath) or 19 (around Modoc). In area 19, it is called "Some homeless people" but it is the same encounter nontheless. The chance to get it should be higher in area 19, since the engine has fewer encounters to choose from there.

This encounter is a bit weird and possibly buggy. The homeless follow an AI similar to the wolves in front of the Military Base: They close in, turning hostile at a certain point. They are armed with very basic weapons only: knives, brass knuckles, sharpened poles, and I don't think they ever actually attack. They just turn hostile and start running away.

Killing the homeless costs you only one karma point each, instead of the usual ten. But beware: the bent baldies in the yellow shirts are children. Their description says "a little boy" and if you kill one of them, you get the child killer perk. The children will neither attack nor move during combat, so it should be easy to avoid.

Strangely enough, you also get 15 karma points for each child you kill in this encounter. I suppose this is a bug.

There are two corresponding encounters, "Some bandits ambushing some homeless people" ("Some highwaymen attacking some homeless people" round Modoc) and "Some homeless people butchering some farmers", but I can't remember ever getting one of them.
